Xochimilco, meaning Place Where Flowers Grow in Náhuatl, is home to an extensive network of canals and waterways. Mexico City exists over what was once an ancient lake and today all that remains are the canals and chinampas (gardens) of Xochimilco. Located toward the southern edge of Mexico City, the floating gardens of Xochimilco are a favorite weekend destination for Chilangos (Mexico City residents) and visitors.
Visitors can hire a colorfully decorated wooden gondola, or trajinera, to cruise the waterways.
Local vendors are on hand to provide food and drink. Elotes are a local specialty.
Musicians playing marimbas sail alongside boatloads of party-goers adding to the festive atmosphere.
Wander further from the embarcaderos (boat landings) and the crowds seem to magically disperse.
Exploring the floating gardens of Xochimilco in a colorful trajinera is a must for visitors to Mexico City! Xochimilco is easily reached on public transportation.
