Mitla is a primarily Zapotec town located in the Central Valles of Oaxaca, 46km southeast of Oaxaca City. This area of Mexico is known for producing mezcal, an alcoholic beverage made from the maguey, or agave, plant that is native to the Oaxaca region. Mezcal is a mestizo drink produced using both traditional indigenous pulque and the distillation process introduced by the Spanish. If you’re headed to Mitla to visit the ruins or the local tianguis you’ll notice several of these colorful mezcal shops along the way.
