Beautiful stretches of sparsely populated coastline, rustic ocean-front cabanas with hammocks right out on the beach, a new-age vibe and unique mix of locals and travelers made Playa Zipolite a fast favorite and it’s where I spent my first New Year’s in Mexico. We released candlelit paper boats into the ocean and sipped mezcal at beach-front reggae bars. We slept in a small cabana under a mosquito net with only the sound of waves crashing against the shore to lull us to sleep. It was hard to imagine a more perfect escape. Since that first visit I’ve toured much of Mexico’s coastal areas and while it’s been tough to find a beach town or resort area I don’t like; it’s the smaller less-developed beach towns like Zipolite in Oaxaca that I enjoy the most.
