Construction continues on the new Bicentennial Metro Line in Mexico City. This is just one of many major infrastructure projects planned to coincide with the celebrations of Mexico’s 200th anniversary of Independence from Spain on September 16, 2010. This new 12th metro line will extend to the far southeastern borough of Tláhuac – an area of Mexico City that is currently only reached by pesero, or microbus.

With less than two weeks to go until the Bicentennial celebrations, workers have just recently arrived at the stretch of Avenida Tláhuac that runs through Santiago Zapotitlán. The metro will run as an elevated train through much of the area, heading underground when it gets closer to the city center. With a good amount of work still to be completed, word on the street is that construction of the Bicentennial Metro Line is now expected to continue through 2012. This news comes as a big disappointment to many area residents who are more than ready to trade their two-hour-plus traffic-clogged commute for a quicker and more efficient way to travel downtown.
