These friendly food stalls advertising comida corrida, or fast food at an affordable price, can be found all over Mexico. They offer complete meals cooked to order for no more than three or four dollars and they’re frequently found in the local markets or along the street. There are usually no menus, just a few standard specials written on a poster board sign and the occasional daily specialty or two (often it’s whatever was a good bargain in the market that morning).
The comida corrida stalls can also be a neat place to mingle with the locals and meet other travelers. Long tables are set up in rows and dining space is shared by everyone.
Many of the vendors work together so if, for example, you prefer juice from one stand and your meal from another it can be easily arranged. Many of the recipes and the kitchens are passed down through the family and the quality of the traditional local dishes is often quite good. If you’re unsure as to which stall to choose, I suggest you head for the one that seems to be the most popular among the locals.
These comida corrida stalls in the market in Taxco were especially tasty.
