Today I finally made it out to the Plaza Rio de Janiero to check out the new Mercado el 100 organic farmers market. In a city of markets, the new Mercado el 100 claims to be the first weekly open-air market offering a selection of locally produced organic products. The idea behind the city’s newest tianguis is that everything sold here will have been produced within 100 miles. To quote Nicholas Gilman, author of Good Food in Mexico City, “The local food movement has arrived in el D.F.” (For more information about the new market check out his recent blog post).
If you’re thinking of going, the small but popular Mercado el 100 alternates between Parque Mexico in Roma, the Casa de Francia at Havre 15 in the Zona Rosa and the Plaza Rio de Janeiro at Orizaba and Durango in Roma.
