We’re kicking off Vegan Month of Food at the same time that everyone in Mexico is celebrating Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Pan de Muerto (bread of the dead) is a holiday bread that’s traditionally used to decorate gravesites and alters and it’s only available this time of year. It’s a sweet egg bread flavored with anise and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. I thought about attempting a vegan-friendly version, but decided against it since I’m actually not a huge fan of sweet bread – vegan or not – and Carlos enjoys buying his pan de muerto in the local market. Instead, we’ll be making our VeganMoFo cooking debut later in the week beginning with a simple recipe for black bean soup with lime, cilantro and avocado.

It’s definitely a nice time of year to be in Mexico. I spent the morning at the market picking up ingredients for the soup, now I’m just hoping it turns out alright

My brother-in-law is Mexican (though he has lived in Europe for almost a decade now), and this time every year, his mother sends him a package fllled with homemade Pan de Muerto and other treats. I always thought this was such a fascinating holiday – very different to anything we’d have in Europe.

aw, i missed making pan de muertos this year (i went gluten free and baking vegan gluten free bread isn’t up there on my favorite list yet), but i have a great vegan recipe!

Love celebrating Day of the Dead in San Francisco, which is great fun because of the diverse cultures. However, I am sure it is incredible in Mexico ~ maybe some day.
