One of the ingredients I’ve been searching for lately and haven’t been able to find in the local market is tofu. While having dinner at Corazón del Árbol the other day I asked our waitress if there was anywhere nearby where we might be able to find it. She responded with “mi casa”. Carlos and I glanced at each other wondering,

Does she sell tofu out of her home?

Of course that actually wouldn’t be as unusual as one might think. Where we used to live in Tláhuac several of our neighbors ran small convenience stores out of their apartments, selling things like chips, soda, cigarettes and beer from their bedroom windows, although you don’t see that as much here in the center.

Either way, she must have known what we were thinking because she laughed and explained that Mikasa is actually a Japanese grocery located a few blocks away. They carry all kinds of vegetarian products (including tofu) as well as a wide variety of teas, seasonings, prepared foods, fish and more.
