Located 130 km south of Cancún, the expansive stretches of sparsely populated white sand beaches at Tulum are backed by the blue-green waters of the Caribbean. Simple cabañas, camp sites and beachfront bars are scattered along the beach. Kick back, relax, go for a swim, admire the well preserved cliff-top Maya ruins at Tulum or head inland about 42 km to visit the ancient city of Cobá. Cobá was among the largest of the Maya cities and it’s architecture more closely resembles that of Tikal in neighboring Guatemala than of nearby Chichén Itzá or Uxmal. Cobá is home to the tallest Maya structure on the Yucatán Peninsula – the 42 meter high great pyramid Nohoch Mul.

Just visited the ruins at Tulum last March and absolutely loved it. Highly recommend it. Saw Chichén Itzá years ago but I’m not familiar with Coba. Guess we’ll have to go back and check it out.

The ruins at Coba are a bit more remote than the other two sites and the site itself is more spread out, but it’s definitely worth a visit. The fact that you can climb the structures (at least you could when I was there) was one of the things I really liked about it, and the views from the top of the pyramid were awesome!
