The view overlooking Mexico City from the Cerro de la Estrella (Hill of the Star), a mesoamerican archaeological site located in the city’s southern Iztapalapa borough. The hill is part of the Cerro de la Estrella National Park — a 2,700 acre natural area in the eastern region of the Valley of Mexico — and was once the site of the ancient Aztec New Fire ceremony. Today, the hill serves as the site of Mexico City’s reenactment of the crucifixion that’s acted out each year during Semana Santa. Dating back to 1833, the Passion Play that takes place each year in Iztapalapa is one of the largest in all of Mexico and Latin America with hundreds of actors and upwards of two million spectators.
