Each year the southern Iztapalapa borough of Mexico City hosts some of the largest Semana Santa (Holy Week) events in all of Latin America. Good Friday is the busiest day when upwards of two million people descend on the neighborhood to watch the passion play. But it’s not just actors and spectators that show up — as many as 4,000 officers take to the streets to monitor the crowds. Street vendors are also out in full force and central Iztapalapa takes on a feria-type atmosphere with market stalls and amusement park-style rides and attractions. The day’s main events begin around mid-morning in the center of town, then around 3pm the procession makes its way uphill to the Cerro de la Estrella where a dramatic reenactment of the crucifixion is staged.
