If you are thinking of exotic holiday destinations then Mexico may not have come up on your wish list. Media attention can often portray the country in a negative light, with violence and crime putting many individuals off. However, if you take the time to research this country you’ll actually discover that it is a beautiful nation to visit and has a multi billion dollar tourism industry catering to your every need.

Palm fringed beaches, exotic jungles and spectacular wildlife can be found around this country and if you want to step a little outside the Western World then Mexico is a fantastic place to start.

Before you travel it is a good idea, as with any destination, to do a little research. Some areas of the country are more prone to violence and crime than others and you can easily highlight which areas to avoid. Meanwhile, a little Spanish doesn’t go amiss in this developing country and by having even the most basic of language skills you will find that locals are more than happy to help you settle in and get into the vibe of the culture.

Mexico certainly has no end to top attractions to explore and offers a multitude of sightseeing destinations. Several urban retreats are ripe for discovering including the original resort town of Acapulco and the stunningly colourful colonial city of Sierra de Guanajuato. Coming to iconic status in the 1950’s Acapulco became the destination of the rich and famous, with many Hollywood stars seeking out refuge in this coastal oasis. Meanwhile, the mountain city of Sierra de Guanajuato was founded in 1554 due to its proximity to a huge silver mining region. Fantastic haciendas and colonial buildings grace the city and with urban traffic utilising a system of underground tunnels, it is the perfect pedestrian retreat.

If you’re interested in water sports and activities then Mexico offers a great range of entertainment. For scuba divers one of the most glorious places it Cozumel which is located off the Yucatán Peninsula. It is famed as one of the best diving spots in the world and has an amazing array of tropical fish and coral reefs. Meanwhile, Los Cabos has 20 miles of beautiful beach and is ideal for whale watching, sailing and fishing.

A great range of ancient monuments and ruins also exist including Palenque, Chichén Itzá and Teotihuacán. Part of the ancient Maya empire Palenque structures date from between 600 AD and 800 AD and include the stunning Temple of Inscriptions. Chichén Itzá meanwhile is the largest of the Maya cities and is home to El Castillo, the temple pyramid. And if you want to explore 2nd century BC civilization then Teotihuacán is the place to visit with huge pyramids that are some of the largest in Mexico.

Travelling to Mexico is relatively easy in modern day, with many routes offering direct services to the country. Meanwhile, cheap holiday packages to Mexico offer the perfect alternative and you could enjoy a fantastic twin centre holiday. And by including Mexico as a holiday option you are likely to be surprised by this wonderful nation.
