This is a guest post by Katherine Robinson. Katherine Robinson is a freelance writer who enjoys writing about her travel experiences which may be useful to other travellers.

If you’re travelling to Mexico and have been invited to a buffet or finger food party there is a good chance that you’ll get to sample sopes. They’re also a popular street food and can even be found on the menu at some restaurants.

What is Sope?

Sopes are round cakes made of fried pastry of ground maize soaked in lime. They look like a thick tortilla and are usually topped with vegetables, meat, lettuce, salsa or cheese.

Where does Sope originate from?

Even though sopes are eaten all over the country, they originate from Culiacán which is a city in the north-west of Mexico in the State of Sinaloa. It is served by Federal de Bachigualato International Airport, which is used for domestic flights. If your flight is from Europe, the USA or somewhere further afield you will most likely have a stopover in Mexico City.
