Fishing lines used by the local boys in the port city of Veracruz

On our last evening in Veracruz we passed by a group of boys fishing off the edge of the malecon. They were using just a simple fishing line attached to a piece of wood. We stopped to watch and they offered to let us give it a try — they’ll even rent them out to you if you’re interested in hanging around long enough to really learn. We weren’t, but I think we surprised them when we asked if they would sell us one of their fishing lines. My friend thought it would be a clever gift to take home to her young nephew who’s learning how to fish back in the States. After all, considering all the gear that’s necessary for a quick fishing trip to the local reservoir, we thought it would be neat to show him how it’s done in Veracruz. I would have liked to see his face when she handed it to him, “This is what the boys in Veracruz use to fish…no really, it is!” icon wink Travel Snapshot: Fishing Veracruz Style

Really cool souvenir. Those are the ones that really mean something, the ones that have a story behind them.

When we were in Honduras we saw some local kids fishing with a twig and string and a nail tied to the end of it. And they were highly successful at hauling in fish for dinner. Crazy..

A string with a nail tied to it…now that’s impressive! It’s pretty amazing how people can manage to make do with what’s available. ;-)

We like soft-drink cans — easier to wind back your reel. And you can make a whole rod with bamboo and a soft-drink can — costs cents.

I never would have thought to use soda cans, great idea!
