Fishing lines used by the local boys in the port city of Veracruz
On our last evening in Veracruz we passed by a group of boys fishing off the edge of the malecon. They were using just a simple fishing line attached to a piece of wood. We stopped to watch and they offered to let us give it a try — they’ll even rent them out to you if you’re interested in hanging around long enough to really learn. We weren’t, but I think we surprised them when we asked if they would sell us one of their fishing lines. My friend thought it would be a clever gift to take home to her young nephew who’s learning how to fish back in the States. After all, considering all the gear that’s necessary for a quick fishing trip to the local reservoir, we thought it would be neat to show him how it’s done in Veracruz. I would have liked to see his face when she handed it to him, “This is what the boys in Veracruz use to fish…no really, it is!”

The best kind of souvenir. Love it!
Definitely! I thought it was a cool idea for a souvenir. I hope he liked it!
Really cool souvenir. Those are the ones that really mean something, the ones that have a story behind them.
When we were in Honduras we saw some local kids fishing with a twig and string and a nail tied to the end of it. And they were highly successful at hauling in fish for dinner. Crazy..
A string with a nail tied to it…now that’s impressive! It’s pretty amazing how people can manage to make do with what’s available.
I love discovering simplicity through my travels!
Who knew that fishing could be so simple! Found your site tonight and I think it’s great.
Thanks Ross, glad you found me!
We like soft-drink cans — easier to wind back your reel. And you can make a whole rod with bamboo and a soft-drink can — costs cents.
I never would have thought to use soda cans, great idea!
